  15. <p>     DIED. JONATHAN GLUCKMAN, 78, white South African pathologist
  16. who last year pricked the national conscience with his announcement
  17. that he believed from his examination of bodies that police
  18. were routinely killing people in custody; of complications following
  19. back surgery; in Johannesburg. After the failure of his private
  20. appeals to top officials, including President F.W. de Klerk,
  21. Gluckman went public in July with claims that 90% of some 200
  22. prisoner autopsies he had performed indicated that the victims
  23. had been "violently done to death" by police. "I can't stand
  24. it any longer," Gluckman said. "The lower rungs of the police
  25. are totally out of control."
